바리새인이라 말하지 마세요 (The Need for Ascetism)- 영어/한어
I believe the decline of Korean churches is partly due to the lack of emphasis on an ascetic lifestyle in their Christian walk.
Unlike their parents, young Korean Christians seem to be more lax about drinking and smoking because they don’t believe they are sins.
True, they are not sins. But we’ve witnessed numerous people’s faith grows after they quit drinking or smoking. It’s not because they are sins but because a measure of ascetism was introduced in their lives.
Without some measure of ascetism, it’s hard to maintain faith.
Korean Christians’ practice of coming to church for early morning prayer has declined in popularity because many people believe that it does not matter to God whether you pray inside a church or somewhere else. However, our ancestors were able to hold on to their Christian faith in hostile environments because of their ascetic practice of early morning prayer. We can’t afford to do less now. Modern society is just as strongly hostile, if not more so.
Some Bible teachers argue that tithing is a legalistic practice from the Old Testament. Some radical theologians even go so far as to accuse those who encourage tithing of betraying the Gospel. But faithful tithing protects people from falling into materialism, the main driving force in today’s culture. It is actually a form of financial asceticism.
We are living in a world dominated by a disobeying spirit and uncontrolled desires. A measure of ascetism helps us control these unbridled passions, keep spiritual balance, and strengthen our faith.

오늘날 기독교가 쇠락하는 이유 중의 하나는 성도들의 삶에서 금욕적인 요소가 결여되었기 때문이라고 생각합니다.
요즈음 젊은 크리스천들은 부모 세대들과 달리 술 담배에 대해 자유로운 것 같습니다. 성경에 비춰볼 때 술 담배가 죄가 아니라고 생각하기 때문입니다. 그러나 새로 믿는 사람들이 술 담배를 끊으면서 믿음이 급성장 하는 것을 봅니다. 삶에 금욕적인 요소가 더해졌기 때문입니다.
하나님은 어디에나 계시는데 꼭 새벽에 교회 가서 기도해야 하느냐고 비웃는 사람들이 있습니다. 그러나 이런 사람들을 새벽 기도 드리는 사람들과 비교해 볼 때, 새벽 기도 하는 사람들이 성경에 기록된 성도의 삶과 더 가까운 것을 봅니다. 침대에 누워 좀 더 자고 싶은 욕구를 극복하고, 정해진 장소를 찾아, 정해진 시간에 기도한다는 금욕적인 요소가 더해졌기 때문입니다.
십일조가 복음적이지 않다면서, 십일조를 강조하는 목사들을 무식한 사람처럼 취급하는 이들도 있습니다. 그러나 사고 싶은 것을 사지 않고, 하나님께 약속한 헌금을 꼬박꼬박 바치는 금욕적인 행위가, 물질주의가 팽배한 세상에서 돈의 노예가 되는 것을 막아준다는 것을 모르는 것 같습니다.
오늘날 불순종과 절제되지 않은 욕망이 판을 치고 있습니다. 이러한 세상에서 믿음을 지키기 위해서는, 신앙생활에 금욕적인 요소가 절대적으로 필요합니다. 술 담배를 않거나, 철저히 성수 주일을 하거나, 빠짐없이 새벽 기도를 드리거나, 꼬박꼬박 십일조를 바치거나, 정기적으로 금식 하는 것 등이 필요합니다.
지식이 아니라 변화된 삶이 진정한 그리스도의 제자로서의 증거가 된다면, 이런 절제된 삶을 사는 사람들을 율법주의자나 바리새인으로 매도하지 않으면 좋겠습니다.
