An anti-discrimination law is pending in the Legislature in Korea. This law addresses all kinds of discrimination, but the most important is sex discrimination. Although there are already many laws in regards to sex discrimination, gay activists are pushing for this law because they feel the existing laws are not sufficient, even when enforced.
Once passed, this law could be used to make teaching or preaching against homosexuality a crime. Christians cannot help but oppose it because this law infringes upon freedom of religion and freedom of speech. Many Korean Christians have gone out to the streets and staged mass rallies in protest against this law.
Christians should be careful in framing this issue. We should make it clear that the issues we care about are ethics, families, and freedom of speech and that Christians are not anti-discrimination. Otherwise the general public may think Christians favor discrimination. Gay activists can then exploit this misperception and try to paint Christians as oppressors who are against eliminating discrimination in society.
Christians should choose our words carefully and articulate our position accurately. We should also actively demonstrate that we are not against homosexuals or anti-discrimination causes. We must remember that God hates sin but loves all His children. If Christians had cared for AIDS patients instead of condemning them when the AIDS epidemic broke out decades ago, would God have been upset or pleased? I am sure God would have been pleased because He is always on the side of the weak, the oppressed, and the suffering.
It may be inevitable that gay marriage is eventually legalized in Korea, following the paths of the US and many European countries. Still, Christians shouldn¡¯t stop fighting against the laws that suppress our religious rights and freedom. Let¡¯s build relationships with the LGBTQ community, protect them from discrimination and hatred and lead them to personal relationships with Jesus. But until it becomes legalized (and even after), we must continue to proclaim the Biblical truth that homosexuality is unnatural, immoral, and against God¡¯s will.
