크리스천이 세상을 바꾸려면 (To Change the World)-영어/한글
The U.S. was founded on Biblical principles but is rapidly being secularized. To combat secularization, some Christians vigorously engage in politics, trying to elect people with Christian values for Congress or pressure presidents to nominate people with Christian values as Supreme Court judges.
Korea has never been a Christian nation so the term “secularization” doesn’t apply, but traditional morality and values are quickly deteriorating.
How do we fight against the secularization of society or the breaking down of morality as Christians? There is a book which tries to give an answer to this question: “To Change the World” by James D. Hunter.
The author insists that the secularization of America cannot be stopped through political means. Passing laws to enforce Christian values would be ineffective because force does not change culture or society.
A good example of this is the Eighteenth Amendment, more commonly known as Prohibition. At the time, domestic and social ills caused by alcoholism were rampant. Christians led the way to pass the constitutional amendment criminalizing the sale of alcoholic beverages. It was passed by Congress into law in 1919. But the law was so ineffective that it was repealed just 14 years later in 1933. Law cannot produce change in culture or morality.
There is one sure way to change society - Jesus’ way. There is no denying that Jesus changed the entire world’s history for the better. His secret to bringing change was actually avoiding the use of force. When Satan met Jesus in the wilderness, he tried three times to tempt Jesus to resort to power in order to save the world. Jesus refused them all(Mat 4:1~11).
What is Jesus’ way? (1) He trusted God to bring change in people and society. (2) He did not pursue a position of power, but became a servant. (3) He practiced sacrificial love. (4) He befriended outsiders.
The early Christians were able to make an impact on society and eventually conquer the Roman Empire because they followed Jesus’ way. They formed loving communities that welcomed everyone regardless of their social status, race or sex. When epidemics swept cities, they stayed behind to care for the sick instead of fleeing like other citizens did. When they were persecuted, they did not seek revenge, but instead forgave.
Some may not agree with the author entirely. But this book is definitely worth reading and deserves serious consideration.

기독교 국가였던 미국이 급속히 세속화 되고 있습니다. 이를 막아보려고 미국 크리스천들은 안간힘을 쓰고 있습니다. 한국은 기독교 국가가 아니기 때문에 세속화라는 표현은 사용할 수 없지만, 전통적인 가치와 윤리가 급속히 무너지고 있는 것은 미국과 같습니다. 이러한 추세는 미국에서도, 한국에서도, 막을 길이 없어 보입니다. 그렇다면 크리스천들은 이러한 현상을 바라보고만 있어야 할 것인가? 세속화를 막을 수 있는 길은 진정 없는가? 이런 질문에 대한 답을 시도한 책이 있습니다. 오늘날 미국 크리스천들은 정치적인 파워를 통하여 세속화를 막아보려고 합니다. 기독교적 가치관을 가진 정치인을 의회로 보내고, 이러한 사람들이 대법관으로 임명 받도록 정치 운동을 벌입니다. 그러나 저자는 정치적 파워는 세상을 바꾸지 못한다고 강조합니다. 미국의 ‘금주령’이 좋은 예입니다. 술로 인해 인생과 가정이 파괴되는 것을 보다 못해 크리스천들이 주도하여 1919년에 금주령을 헌법에 추가시켰지만, 세상은 바뀌지 않았습니다. 밀주로 인한 범죄만 늘어나서 결국 14년만에 폐기하고 말았습니다.
인류 역사 상 가장 큰 변화를 가져온 인물이 예수님이라는 데에는 이의가 없을 것입니다. 그런데 예수님께서는 파워를 거부하셨습니다. 광야에서 예수님을 시험했던 사단의 세 가지 시험의 핵심은 모두, 파워에 의존하여 세상을 구원하라는 것이었습니다(마태 4:1~11).
대신에 예수님께서는 (1) 하나님만 의지하였습니다. (2) 종이 되어 섬겼습니다. (3) 희생적으로 사랑하셨습니다. (4) 죄인들의 친구가 되셨습니다.
초대 교회가 로마를 뒤집을 수 있었던 것은 바로 이 예수님의 방법을 사용했기 때문입니다. 사회적 신분에 상관 없이 가족으로 받아드려 음식을 같이 먹고, 사랑해 주었습니다. 전염병이 창궐해서 시민들이 피신할 때에는 뒤에 남아 병자들을 돌보았습니다. 핍박을 받아도 복수하지 않고 축복했습니다. 예수님의 방법을 도입했기 때문에 마침내는 로마 제국을 정복할 수 있었던 것입니다.
이 책의 저자는 크리스천들이 세상을 변화시키기 위해서는, 세상을 변화시키겠다는 욕구를 버리는 데에서 시작해야 한다고 말합니다. 세상을 바꾸는 일은 하나님의 영역이고, 우리의 역할은 세상의 빛과 소금이 되는 것이라고 말합니다. 약하고, 힘없고, 고통 받는 사람들을 돌보고, 가족같은 공동체를 만들어, 서로 사랑하고 돌보며, 이러한 공동체의 아름다움을 세상에 보이는 것입니다. 이럴 때 하나님께서 이러한 공동체, 즉 교회를 통해 세상을 바꾸십니다.
모든 사람이 다 동의하지는 않겠지만, 진지하게 읽고 생각해볼만한 책입니다.
