동생 같던 목사가 천국으로(Another Love of Mine Passed)-영어/한글
Pastor Sang Rae Lee of Miracle Land Baptist Church in Southern California was like a brother to me. He passed away on August 19, leaving behind a young wife, a son and a daughter. It’s the third loss of a loved one that I’ve experienced in the recent past; my wife, my mother-in-law, and now Pastor Lee, all went to Heaven a month apart.
When he was diagnosed with cancer about a year ago, the tumor had already spread from his kidneys to his lungs. The cancer was so advanced that he couldn’t be treated with traditional chemotherapy. He passed away about two weeks ago.
He was not just a good pastor but also an energetic missionary. The house church movement is currently sweeping East African nations including Rwanda, Uganda, Congo and Tanzania due to his missionary efforts there.
He died relatively young by modern standards. His death begs the question - why did God take him to Heaven when he is still young enough to continue to do so much for God and His kingdom? I am now old enough to know there is no definitive answer to a question like this, but I dare to speculate.
God seems to use some people’s deaths to accomplish important missions. Jesus is the obvious example. Unlike Jesus’ death, however, the purposes most deaths serve are not always clear. The Apostle James is an illustration of this ambiguity. Jesus chose twelve Apostles out of his many disciples. Out of these twelve, He further chose three for special training - Peter, John, and James. Unlike Peter and John, James didn’t do much for the Kingdom because he was slain by King Herod soon after the Jerusalem church was established.
All the special training James had received seemed to have been wasted. But our all-knowing and all-powerful God couldn’t make a mistake. I believe James died for one of those great hidden missions, which could only be accomplished through his death.
I believe this is also the case for Pastor Lee.
I took a mission trip to East Africa at his urging. One evening in Rwanda, he and I visited a night market. One street vendor was selling meat boiled in a gigantic iron kettle. Pastor Lee practically salivated and said we should sample the dish. I usually enjoy street food, but the chunks of unsavory fat floating in the soup looked too unappetizing. I said I couldn’t eat it, so we left.
The moment I heard of Pastor Lee’s passing, this memory hit me out of the blue and filled me with regret. I wish I had eaten the meat soup with him, even if it would’ve made me sick.

지난 주에는, 동생처럼 생각하는 이상래 목사 장례식이 있었습니다(미국 남가주 미라클랜드침례교회 담임. 아내는 두란노 ‘어린이 그림성경 창작 활동북’의 저자 민혜정). 한달 간격으로 아내, 장모님, 그리고 동생같은 목사를 천국에 보냈습니다. 약 1년 전에 신장에서 암이 발견되었을 때에는, 이미 폐로 전이되어 있었습니다. 그래서 제대로 항암 치료도 못 받아보고 8월 19일에 세상을 떠났습니다.
이상래 목사는, 새로이 담임 목사가 부임해서 오래 머물지 못하고 떠나곤 했던 미라클랜드침례교회에 와서, 교회를 안정시키고 가정교회로 전환시켰습니다. 동부아프리카에(르완다, 우간다, 콩고, 탄자니아) 가정교회를 소개해서 가정교회가 요원의 불길처럼 퍼져나가도록 하는데 주역을 맡기도 했습니다. 이런 목사가 활발하게 활동할 58세에 갑자기 세상을 떠나버리다니, 어안이 벙벙합니다. 충격 가운데, 어쩔 수 없이 떠오르는 질문이 있습니다. 왜 하나님께서 이상래 목사를 일찍 데려가셨을까?
이런 질문에 대한 답은 천국에나 가야 얻을 수 있다는 것을 압니다. 그러나 유족들을 위하여, 저 자신을 위하여, 다음과 같은 추측을 해봅니다.
하나님의 어떤 큰 뜻은 누군가 목숨을 바쳐야만 이루어질 수 있는 것 같습니다. 사도 야고보가 예가 되지 않을까 싶습니다. 예수님께서는 많은 제자들 중에서 12명을 선택하여 사도로 부르셨고, 그 중에서도 베드로, 요한, 야고보3명을 선택하여 특별훈련을 시켰습니다. 그런데 야고보는 예루살렘 교회가 시작되고 얼마 안 되어 헤롯에 의하여 목숨을 읽었고, 허무하게 세상을 떠났습니다. 남겨 놓은 것이 별로 없습니다. 이렇게 될 것을 아셨다면 예수님께서 다른 사람을 선택해서 훈련시키시든지, 아니면 야고보가 오래 살도록 손써 주셔야지! 이런 생각이 드는 것은 어쩔 수 없습니다.
그러나 야고보는 목숨을 바쳐야 이룰 수 있는 하나님의 큰 뜻을 이루기 위하여 죽었다고 저는 믿습니다. 모든 것을 아시고, 모든 것을 하실 수 있는 하나님께서 실수하셨을 리가 없기 때문입니다. 이상래 목사도 우리가 알지 못하는 하나님의 큰 뜻을 위하여 죽었다고, 저는 믿습니다. 이 뜻이 무엇인지는 나중에 천국에 가면 분명히 알게 되겠지요.
이상래 목사가 강청을 해서 저도 동아프리카 선교 여행을 다녀왔습니다. 르완다에서 야시장 구경을 나갔는데, 큰 솥에 고기를 푹푹 삶아서 파는 것을 보았습니다. 시장 음식을 유난히 좋아했던 이 목사가 군침을 흘리는데, 국물 위에 둥둥 떠 있는 비게 덩어리는 보기만 해도 제 비위를 뒤집었습니다. 도저히 먹을 용기가 안 생긴다고 하니까, 이 목사도 포기하고 같이 자리를 떴습니다.
이 목사가 세상을 떠났다는 소식을 듣는 순간, 뜬금 없이 이런 생각이 떠올랐습니다. “그때 먹고 토하는 한이 있더라도, 같이 먹어줄 걸.”
