언행이 거친 주의 종 (“Good Christians”)-영어/한글
We sometimes come across Christians who are aggressive and argumentative and don’t get along well with people. Sadly, many of them consider themselves (and are considered by others) as “good Christians.”
When Jesus entered Jerusalem, knowing he was to soon die on the cross, he went to the temple. There he was asked, “What is the greatest commandment?” He answered by quoting Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18 (Matt 22:34-40), stating that it was loving God and loving one’s neighbors that is the most important command.
Jesus put a phrase, “the second is like it” (Matt 22:39) between these two verses. He was saying that love for God and love for people are the same and inseparable. If you love God, you can’t help but love your neighbor, and if you don’t love your neighbor, it is a sign that you don’t love God.
Loving neighbors is not just doing something spectacular for others. In fact, Apostle Paul declared that dramatic actions such as giving all one’s possessions to the poor or surrendering one’s body to the flames is not necessarily acts of love(1Cor 12: 3). Rather, love is expressed in small things like being patient and kind, not envying or boasting, not being proud or rude. In short, love is being considerate and kind to people (1Cor 12: 4~5).
When I see Christians who utter harsh words against people who have differing views, I wonder if they are really strong Christians as they seem to believe for themselves because they are neither considerate nor kind. They are not loving. If they don’t love people, it means they don’t love God.
People who don’t love God cannot be “good Christians.”

크리스천 지도자들 가운데에는 언행이 거친 분들이 있습니다. 하인들에게 하듯이 교인들도 대합니다. 이런 분들이 큰 교회를 담임하면 ‘주의 종’이라고 대접받고, 기도를 많이 하면 ‘신령한 종’이라고 인정받습니다. 그런데 전 이런 분들이 유능한 경영인이나, 정치인이 될 수는 있어도, ‘거룩한 주의 종’은 될 수 없다고 생각합니다.
예수님께서 십자가에서 돌아가시기 위해 예루살렘에 입성하셨을 때, 유대인 종교자들이 예수님을 테스트하기 위해 질문을 던졌습니다. \"선생님, 율법 가운데 어느 계명이 가장 큽니까? (마태 22:36)” 이때 예수님께서는 신명기 6:5와 레위기 19:18을 인용하셨습니다. 마음과 목숨과 뜻을 다해서 하나님을 사랑하고, 이웃을 자신의 몸처럼 사랑하라고 하셨습니다.
예수님께서 두 성경 구절을 인용하실 때, 그 사이에 “이것과 같은데”(마태 22:39)라는 구절을 삽입하셨습니다. 하나님 사랑과 이웃 사랑은 같은 것이라는 것입니다. 분리될 수 없다는 것입니다. 하나님을 사랑하면 이웃을 사랑하지 않을 수 없고, 하나님을 사랑하는지 안 하는지는 이웃을 사랑하는지 않는지를 보아 알 수 있다는 것입니다.
우리는 이웃을 사랑한다고 하면, 소록도에 가서 나병 환자들을 치유하거나, 아프리카 오지에 가서 원주민들과 더불어 사는 극적인 모습을 연상합니다. 물론 이것도 사랑입니다. 그러나 이런 것만이 사랑은 아닙니다. 사실 사도 바울은 모든 소유를 나누어주고, 자신의 몸을 내어주는 극적인 희생을 보인다 할지라도, 사랑이 아닐 수 있다고 말합니다(고전 13:3). 그리고 사랑이 무엇인지를 설명하면서, 극히 평범한 것들을 나열합니다. 오래 참고, 친절하고, 시기하지 않고, 뽐내지 않고, 교만하지 않고, 무례하지 않고, 자기의 이익을 구하지 않고, 성을 내지 않고, 원한을 품지 않고(고전 13:4~5).
사도 바울에 의하면 사랑은 이웃에 대한 관심과 배려입니다.
언행이 거칠고, 주위 사람들을 막 대하는 사람들은 상대방을 배려하지 않는 사람들입니다. 사도 바울에 의하면, 이런 사람들이 아무리 목회와 사역을 잘하고, 희생적인 헌신을 보인다 할지라도, 이웃을 사랑하는 사람은 아닙니다. 그리고 예수님에 의하면, 이웃을 사랑하지 않는 사람은 하나님을 사랑하지 않는 사람입니다.이런 사람들을 ‘주의 종’으로 제가 받아드리기 힘든 이유입니다.
