공동체 없이 안 변한다 (No Life Change without Community)-영어/한글
All pastors hope that their church members change for the better by their sermons. So, when they don’t, pastors get discouraged or sometimes get angry. But rarely do pastors ask themselves why their members don’t change despite listening to sermon after sermon every Sunday.
It’s not that church members intentionally ignore what they hear in sermons, but they lack opportunities to practice and apply what they learn. You cannot become a good athlete simply by listening to the coach’s instructions, or a good cook just by watching cooking shows. You must put into practice what you learn. Likewise, church members need a place to practice what they learn from sermons. But unfortunately, many traditional churches do not provide such places.
Church members know how evil the outside world is and how fierce the competition is on the job. If they follow their preachers’ preaching, it’s almost certain they would become failures.
However, it’s relatively easy for house church members to live according to what they learn from sermons because they have places, house churches, where they can practice what they learned such as love, forgiveness and servanthood with their fellow members, which is much easier than with non-Christians. Repetition makes the practice a habit, and then a lifestyle.
They also get life-coaching from their Shepherds and their spouses, who help them to live as Christians, based on their own life experiences. They can also find consolation and support from their fellow house church members when they fail.
Without small communities like house churches, pastors shouldn’t expect for their members to change no matter how eloquently they preach.

목사님들은 교인들이 설교한 대로 살기를 바랍니다. 그래서 설교 말씀을 듣고도 삶이 변하지 않는 교인들을 보면 실패감을 맛보고, 심지어 분노까지 느낍니다. 그러나 왜 성도들의 삶이 변하지 않는지, 설교 말씀대로 살지 못하는지, 원인에 관해서는 깊이 생각을 않는 것 같습니다.
교인들이 설교 대로 살지 못하는 가장 큰 이유는, 원하지 않아서가 아니라 연습 장소가 없기 때문입니다. 좋은 운동 선구가 되기 위해서는 코치에게 들을 것을 연습해야 합니다. 좋은 요리사가 되기 위해서는 요리 강습에서 배운 것을 실습해야 합니다. 교회도 마찬가지입니다. 들은 설교 말씀을 연습하거나 실습할 곳이 필요합니다. 그러나 대부분의 전통 교회에서는 그런 곳이 없습니다.
성도들은 목사님들의 설교대로 살기를 원합니다. 그러나 세상에 나가서 그대로 살기에는 엄두가 안 납니다. 세상은 악하고, 생존경쟁은 치열하기 때문입니다. 목사님 말씀대로 살면 인생의 낙오자가 될 것이 뻔하기 때문입니다. 그래서 죄책감을 느끼면서도 말씀대로 살지 못합니다.
그러나 가정교회에서는 말씀대로 살기가 비교적 쉽습니다. 설교 말씀을 실습해 볼 연습장이 있기 때문입니다. 매주일 모이는 목장입니다. 이곳에서 설교에서 들은 사랑, 용서, 섬김 등을 목장 식구들을 대상으로 연습해 볼 수 있습니다.
또 신앙 선배인 목자 목녀로부터, 어떻게 크리스천답게 사회생활을 할 수 있을지, 경험에 기초한 코칭도 받을 수 있습니다. 그러다가 실패를 맛보거나 상처를 입으면, 목장 식구들에게 하소연도 하고 기도도 받을 수 있습니다.
목회자들은 아무리 깊이와 감동이 있는 설교를 한다 할지라도, 들은 것을 연습해 볼 수 있는 공동체가 없으면, 교인들의 말씀대로 살리라는 기대는 접는것이 좋을 것입니다.
