안수식 사진이 하나도 없어요! (A Miserable Pastor's Wife)
A Christian TV station, CGNTV, aired an interview with me as a Chuseok special. The show hosts are well-known Christian entertainers.
One of the things they asked me was why there were no photos from my ordination. (They obviously got this information from a source.) The reason is that my wife was so obviously miserable that day that no one dared to take her picture or include her in a group photo.
Her misery was understandable. Her family fled North Korea to the South when she was four years old. Her father had never held a steady job his entire life, so naturally, his family struggled financially. As a teenager, she was so ashamed of her dilapidated house that she never invited her friends over. She studied hard and worked diligently to become a pharmacist, allowing her to finally achieve financial stability. She married an engineer who eventually earned a PhD and got a well-paying job. She thought her financial worries were over.
Then I decided to quit my job to become a seminary student. She had always resented and despised men who were financially irresponsible, and she found herself suddenly married to one. She was forced into the role of breadwinnerfor the family. No wonder my ordination day was so miserable for her.
Thankfully she was loved on and cared for by the members of the church where I initially served and then later at Seoul Baptist Church. The coldness and hardness in her heart melted away, dispelling her fear and anger inside. Eventually she came to confess that she was thankful that God made her husband a pastor, because she wouldn’t have become a true believer had He not forced her into becoming a pastor’s wife.

CGNTV ‘하늘빛 향기’ 프로그램에서 저를 초청하여 대담을 갖고, 추석 특집으로 내보냈습니다.진행을 맡은 표인봉, 유인선 씨가 물은 질문 중의 하나가, “목사님은 안수식 사진이 없다면서요?”
그렇습니다. 아내에게는 제가 안수 받던 날이 일생에서 제일 비참했던 날이었다고 합니다. 안수식에 참석은 했지만, 얼굴이 시퍼래서 앉아 있으니까, 감히 사진기도 들이대지 못하고, 같이 사진 찍자고 말할 수도 없다 보니, 안수식 사진이 하나도 없습니다.
당시 아내 감정을 이해합니다. 아내 가족은 아내가 네 살 때 개성에서 월남했습니다. 월남 전에는 정미소를 하며 경제적으로 윤택했지만, 월남해서는 아버지가 일생 동안 직장을 못 잡아 집안이 경제적으로 쪼달렸습니다. 친구들에게 구차한 모습을 보이고 싶지 않아, 중고등학교 때 한 번도 친구들을 집에 데려온 적이 없었답니다.
자신은 약학과를 졸업하여 약사로서 일하게 되고, 남편인 저는 박사 학위를 마치고 연봉이 꽤 높은 직장을 잡게 되면서 가난에서 완전히 벗어났다고 생각했습니다. 그런데 제가 직장 생활을 그만 두고 신학교를 가겠다고 하겠다니, 가족의 생계는 자신이 책임지게 되고, 남편은 자신이 염오하던 생활력 없는 가장이 되어 버렸습니다! 안수식 날이 인생에서 가장 비참한 날이 될 수밖에 없었을 것입니다.
그러나 당시 섬기던 교회 교인들과, 다음 사역지 휴스턴서울교회 교인들이 넘치는 사랑을 보여줌으로 인해, 마음속에서 두려움과 분노가 사라지고, 점점 치유를 받게 되었습니다. 그리고 마침내, 예수 믿을 수 없는 교만한 자기를 구원하기 위하여, 하나님께서 남편을 목사로 만들어주셨다 고 고백까지 하게 되었습니다.
