종교 탄압? (Covid-19 As Political Tool)-In Korean/English
코로나 확진자 숫자가 늘었다고 하면 가슴이 철렁 내려앉습니다. 정부에서 교회를 코로나 감염의 진원지로 몰아가고 있기 때문에, 주일 대면 예배 인원을 더 축소하거나 금지시키면 어쩌나는 두려움 때문입니다.
그러나 정부의 방역 시책에 의문을 제기할 때가 되었습니다. 예를 들어, 주일 대면 예배를 금지하거나, 참석 인원을 제한하는 것은, 주일 예배를 통해 코로나 바이러스가 전파된다는 가정 때문입니다. 그런데 마스크를 쓰고 주일 예배를 드렸는데도 감염된 케이스가 정말 있는지 모르겠습니다. (과거 교회에서 발생한 감염은, 주일 예배를 통해서가 아니라, 마스크를 안 쓰고 밥을 같이 먹었든지, 성가 연습을 해서입니다.)
약 2주 전, “선교단체 인터콥이 정부의 방역법을 어기고, 경북 상주에 있는 수련원에서 1박을 하며 3,000명이 부르짖으며 집회를 가졌다”는, 선정적인 기사가 인터넷 신문에 올랐습니다. 이 기사를 읽고 크리스천들 중에서도 이 집회를 매도하는 사람들이 있었습니다. 그러나 그후에 이 집회를 통해 감염된 사례를 질병관리본부는 발표하지 않았습니다. 마스크를 착용하고 집회를 가졌기 때문에, 감염된 사람들이 하나도 없었다는 뜻입니다.
교인들이 모였을 때, (1) 항상 마스크를 착용하고, (2) 음식 먹을 때 말하지 않고, (3) 발언할 때 반드시 마스크를 쓴다면, 코로나 감염은 염려할 필요가 없어 보입니다. 악수를 한다든가, 뺨을 대는 등 피부 접촉만 하지 않으면, 거리 두기도 별로 중요하지 않은 것 같습니다. 지하철이나 시내 버스를 통한 집단 감염 케이스가 나오지 않는 것을 보면 그렇습니다.
그럼에도 불구하고, 교회당이 코로나 감염의 진원지라는 인상을 주입시켜, 공무원이나 교사들이 주일 예배에 참석하지 못하게 하고, 교회 모임을 임의로 제한하거나 금지하고, 크리스천 모임을 고발하도록 부추기고, 전 공무원을 동원하여 일요일 아침마다 교회를 점검한다면, 정치 사찰이요, 종교 탄압이라고밖에 말할 수 없습니다.
교단이나 기독교 단체에서는, 성명서만 발표하지 말고, 전문가를 고용해서 교회당에서 마스크를 쓰고서 예배를 드렸는데 감염된 사례가 진정으로 있었는지 확인하고, 어떤 조건을 만족시키면 주일 예배를 비롯한 교회 모임이 안전할 수 있는지, 과학적인 데이터에 근거한 합리적인 방역 수칙을 대안으로 제시해야 한다고 생각합니다.

Christians in Korea have been obediently following the government’s Covid-19 protocols without protest, even when worship places were shut down. However, I think the time has come for Christians to start questioning the validity of the government’s anti-Covid measures.
There are less than 100 daily confirmed cases for Covid-19 in all of South Korea. (In the city of Houston alone, the number is about 1,000.) Yet the government still limits the number of people who can gather in a sanctuary and prohibits Christian meetings outside the church.
The administration cites the cases when infection spread within churches as justification of its policies in regard to church gatherings, but those incidents happened in the early stages of the pandemic. At that time, people were infected while eating together or singing without wearing masks.
Shutting down sanctuaries or limiting the number of worshipers is based on the assumption that simply meeting together is the source of Covid-19 spread. This assumption lacks evidence. A couple of weeks ago, 3,000 Christians held an event over the course of two days, defying government's regulations. Not a single infection was reported afterwards, probably because all the attendants wore masks during worship.
The danger of mass infection seems to be negligible if people (1) wear masks during gatherings, (2) don’t talk while eating, (3) make sure to wear masks when speaking. Multiple studies have come out recently, supporting the effectiveness of mask-wearing.
If the administration, against evidence otherwise, continues to ban or limit Christian gatherings, discourage teachers and public employees from attending Sunday services, send government officials to monitor churches every Sunday, and encourage neighbors to report suspicious Christian meetings, the conclusion seems evident. The current government’s measures are meant to control churches, as some Christian groups have long suspected.
I believe Christian organizations or denominations should hire health experts to investigate and analyze church gatherings. Are there actual confirmed cases in which worshippers, wearing masks, spread infection or were infected during worship services? They should formulate and offer reasonable alternatives to current government policies that would allow Christians to meet without sacrificing public safety.
