The House Church Conference for Pastors was held in Korea two weeks ago. It was done as a virtual event for the first time, and 1060 pastors, missionaries and their spouses attended from 70 different locations across the country. This is a video of the speech I made to open the conference.
In my speech I discussed how to optimize the current Covid-19 situation. Here is a brief summary.
Firstly, we should accept the fact that Covid is going to be with us for a long time, at least 2~3 years. We shouldn¡¯t suspend all our ministries until the virus disappears because it¡¯s not going to happen. If we accept the inevitable, we are then able to come up with practical ways to best deal with the circumstances.
Secondly, we should take advantage of online technology. Due to the current epidemic, most ministries are being done online. Online communication, however, has its advantages. Physical distance becomes irrelevant, so we can minster to people afar. Young people are easily reachable because they are already used to being online. They¡¯ve already been playing games, interacting, and giving gifts online.
Thirdly, the Covid epidemic actually provides new opportunities for ministry. People have more free time because there are less meetings and less commuting. Couples have more conflict because they are spending more time together at home. People are more worried because the future is uncertain. These situations may make some people more open to the Gospel.
The fourth is a caveat. The church is a community, modeled after the triune God. Without a community there is no church, so online church is somewhat of an oxymoron. We need to be careful that social distancing, although necessitated by the pandemic, doesn't weaken the communal aspect of the church. We should encourage members to do as many things together as possible. Church members can worship online with other families rather than alone. They can do ministry as a team, even in situations when they can do it alone.
