아내 기념 벤치 (The Memorial Bench for My Wife)-영어/한글
My late wife used to often take walks through her favorite park. Her house church members, all women in the same age group, collected money, got permission from the city of Houston and had a bench installed there in her memory.
The engraving on the bench shows her name, the years of her birth and passing, and the phrase “Jesus is the way and the truth and the life.”
When I prepared my will several years ago, I expressed that I wished to be cremated when I pass. I didn’t want to be buried in a grave because its upkeep would become a burden for the family I leave behind.
My wife hadn’t considered cremation for herself initially, but later opted to do the same, probably because she didn’t want to be buried alone. ^^; When we had her funeral service, there was no coffin, just her picture and flowers.
After the cremation, her ashes were scatted in the azalea bushes in our backyard, her pride and joy. Our children and grandchildren gathered together, and we each took a turn to share fond memories of Mom/Grandma. Then I scattered the ashes over the flowerbed.
I had felt a little empty because there was nothing to remember her by, but thanks to her kind friends, I now feel less so.

휴스턴 공원에 아내를 기념하는 벤치가 설치 되었습니다. 아내가 아침마다 친구들과 같이 걷던 공원입니다. 아내 연배로 구성된 ‘할머니 목장’ 식구들이 돈을 갹출하고 휴스턴 시와 협의해서 설치했습니다.
벤치에는 아내 성명, 태어난 연도, 세상 떠난 연도, 그리고 “예수님은 길이요, 진리요, 생명이다\"라는 메시지가 영어로 적혀 있습니다.
수년 전 제 유언장을 작성할 때, 죽으면 화장을 해달라고 적었습니다. 우리는 언제인가 영광스러운 몸으로 부활할 텐데, 썩어 없어질 시신을 묻고 자녀들이 돌보아야하는 부담을 주기 싫었기 때문입니다.
아내는 자신을 위해서는 매장을 생각했었는데, 혼자 무덤에 묻히는 것이 싫었는지 ^^; 세상 떠나기 전에 자기도 화장을 해달라고 했습니다. 그래서 시신은 화장장으로 보내고, 관 없이 사진과 꽃만 놓고 장례 예배를 드렸습니다.
화장한 뒤에 재는 집 뒤뜰 철쭉 꽃밭에 뿌렸습니다. 아내가 가꾸고 자랑스러워 하던 꽃밭입니다. 재가 든 상자를 가운데 놓고 가족들이 둘러서서, 엄마/할머니에 관해 가장 생각나는 일화를 나눈 후, 꽃밭에 재를 뿌렸습니다.
아내가 원해서 그랬지만, 아내 흔적이 하나도 없다는 것이 다소 허전했는데, 고맙게도 목장 식구들이 아내 기념물을 세워주어서 허전함이 덜해졌습니다.
