죄성을 무시하면 실패한다(Political Result of Ignoring Human Sinfulness)-in Kor/Eng
정치인들은 자신을 포함한 모든 인간이 얼마나 이기적이고 악한 지를 인식하지 못하기 때문에 악수를 두는 것 같습니다.
예를 들어, 현 정부가 부동산 가격을 잡는데 실패하고 있는 이유도, 인간의 죄성(罪性)이 얼마나 뿌리 깊은지 인식하지 못하기 때문이라고 생각합니다. 법만 제정하면 될 것처럼 생각하지만, 인간은 이기적이기 때문에 반드시 빠져나갈 구멍을 찾습니다. 인간의 이기성을 인정하고, 투기 자체를 근절하려 하지 말고 과다한 투기를 방지하고, 주택 공급을 늘리는 쪽으로 가닥을 잡았더라면 더 나은 결과가 생기지 않았을까 싶습니다.
검찰 개혁이 좌초된 것도 인간의 죄성과 이기심을 충분히 인식하지 못한 탓이라고 생각합니다. 개혁에 앞장섰던 사람들은 검찰의 권력 욕구만 보았지, 자신 안에 있는 권력 욕구는 못 보았습니다. 상대방의 이기심만 보았지, 자신들의 이기심은 못 보았습니다. 검찰은 적폐의 소굴이고 자신들은 정의의 사도라는, 선과 악의 대결 구도로 판을 짜다가 무리 수를 두었습니다. 자신의 죄성과 타락을 인정하고, 과격한 개혁보다 점진적인 개선을 추구했더라면 더 나은 결과가 나오지 않았을까 싶습니다.
다양한 정부 시스템 중에서 민주주의가 최선은 아닙니다. 플라톤은 ‘Republic(공화국)’에서 철인(哲人) 정치를 최선으로 꼽았고, 민주 정치를 4번째로 꼽았습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 민주주의가 현실적으로는 최선이 될 수밖에 없는 이유는, 자유 민주주의는 인간의 죄성을 인정하기 때문입니다. 삼권을 분립시켜 어느 특정 개인이나 집단이 권력을 독점하지 못하게 한 것은, 권력을 독점하고자는 하는 인간의 욕구를 인지했기 때문입니다. 그러므로 이상이나 정의를 내세우며 삼권을 모두 장악하려는 어떤 시도도 거부되어야 합니다.
대한민국의 민주주의가 아직 건재하다고 보는 이유는, 권력이 한 개인이나 집단에 편중될 것 같으면 반대당 후보에게 투표하여 이렇게 되지 않도록 방지하는 국민들이 있기 때문입니다.

I believe politicians make poor policy choices because they don’t fully understand how sinful human nature is.
For example, the current Korean administration is trying to stabilize the housing market. They passed laws to discourage the purchase of second homes and heavily taxed multi-home owners to decrease demand. Instead of creating stability, however, housing prices have skyrocketed. People are inherently selfish, seeking loopholes to get even further ahead. Had the administration focused on curbing excessive profiteering rather than trying to entirely eliminate speculation in real estate, they may have had more productive results.
Another example is regarding the administration’s efforts to clean up the Public Prosecutors Office, which they had deemed excessively powerful and corrupt. They portrayed themselves like knights in shining armor trying to slay a dragon, but they abandoned righteous actions and resorted to equally corrupt methods. Some shady tactics they used were ruled in court as illegal, thus thwarting their reformation efforts. If they had simply tried to reform the Public Prosecutors Office rather than remaking it, the outcome might have been better.
According to Plato, democracy is not the best form of government. In his book “Republic”, he lists democracy as the fourth best, following aristocracy, timocracy and oligarchy. Be that as it may, democracy is still the best method of government today because it acknowledges human sinfulness. The three branches of government are based on this understanding. They were designed to prevent one person from wielding all governmental power and becoming a dictator. Any attempt to take control of all three branches, whether done in the name of justice or ideology, should be resisted.
I think democracy in Korea is healthy and effective because citizens have, in recent history, elected candidates from opposing parties when an administration became too powerful.
