기적은 상식이다(Not Miraculous but Natural)-영어/한글
I first read the New Testament from beginning to end when I was in graduate school. At that time I couldn’t accept the miracles recorded in the Bible, such as Jesus feeding the 5000 with five loaves or walking on water, as facts.
But as I was convinced that the resurrection of Jesus was an evidence-based historical fact, it became easy to accept other miracles; if Jesus truly rose from the dead, he could do anything.
I believe that Jesus performed miracles to demonstrate that there is a supernatural world beyond our natural world. The natural world we live in is a four dimensional spacetime. The spiritual world may be a higher dimension. People who live in a lower dimension are not able to imagine or understand a higher dimensional world because our understanding and imagination is limited to this world. It is like trying to understand the dual nature of light and electrons using only the laws of classical physics. You can’t. You can only do that with a high level of physics, quantum mechanics.
Scientifically-minded people may reject the factuality of the miracles described in the Bible because they can’t be proven scientifically. What they don’t realize is that natural laws are inadequate to prove or disprove Jesus’ miracles, because they operate in a higher dimension.
True Christian faith is not possible without accepting the existence of a higher dimensional spiritual world from which God operates. Things we consider miracles may be ordinary events there.

제가 성경(신약성경)을 처음으로 통독했을 때, 받아드리기 힘들었던 것이 기적에 관한 부분이었습니다. 떡 5 덩어리로 5000명이 먹고, 물이 포도주로 변하고, 예수님이 물위를 걷고 등… 과학도로서 도저히 용납할 수 없었습니다.
그러나 오랜 고민 끝에 예수님이 죽었다가 부활하셨다는 것은, 부인할 수 없는 역사적인 사실이라는 결론을 내릴 수밖에 없었고, 부활이 사실이라면 다른 기적도 가능하겠다는 생각이 들면서, 이런 것들이 더 이상 문제가 되지 않았습니다.
과학을 맹신하는 사람들은 ‘과학적’으로 증명이 되지 않으면 어떤 사건이 일어났다는 자체를 부인합니다. 그런데 이런 사람들이 모르는 것이 있습니다. 자연법칙보다 더 높은 차원의 법칙이 있다는 것입니다.
인간이 몸담아 사는 자연 세계는3차원의 공간과 시간을 더한, 4차원의 세계(spacetime)입니다. 하나님이 거하시는 ‘영적’ 세계는 더 높은 고차원의 세계입니다. 그 세계에서 일어나는 일은 저차원의 자연 법칙으로는 설명도, 증명도 될 수 없습니다. 빛이 파동도 되고 입자도 된다든가, 전자가 입자도 되고 파동도 된다는, 빛과 전자의 이원성(duality)은 현대 양자역학으로만 설명이 되지, 고전 물리로는 설명이 불가능한 것과 마찬가지입니다.
하나님께서는 오늘날도 필요하면, 초자연적인 방법으로 인간의 자연 세계에 개입하신다고 믿습니다. 우리에게는 이런 것들이 기적으로 보일지 모르지만, 차원 높은 영적 세계에서는 ‘자연 현상”일지 모릅니다.
예수님께서는 초자연적인 하나님이 계시고, 초자연 법칙이 있다는 것을 보여주기 위해서 기적을 행하셨는데, 이런저런 이유를 들어 예수님의 기적을 부인하는 사람들. 이런 사람들을 진정한 크리스천이라고 부를 수 있을지 모르겠습니다.
