As I mentioned in my recent post, the spiritual world is a world of higher dimension that cannot be fully understood or explained by human beings, who live in a 4 dimensional time-space. One of the spiritual realities that is impossible to fully explain is the Trinity - one Godhead in three persons. It¡¯s beyond human understanding. So Muslims accuse Christians of believing in three Gods. Jehovah¡¯s Witnesses, on the other hand, consider Jesus a created being to make their Jehovah God a mono-god.
The Church Fathers struggled with this issue and formalized the doctrine of the Trinity at the First Council of Nicea in 325 AD. The doctrine was incapable of fully explaining the Trinity, however, because of the inadequacy of human language. As a result, it defined what was NOT the Trinity. If any definition went beyond this, it was considered heresy.
Obviously people cannot have an intimate relationship with an abstract concept. When we pray, I am sure most of us direct our prayers to a certain image of God we have shaped in our minds. Likewise, we cannot fall in love with the Triune God unless we have some kind of mental picture of Him.
Let me share my mental picture of our Triune God.
I start with three close friends, one of them recognized by all as the leader. They are always together; wherever one goes, the others are also there. They love and respect each other. They are eager to honor one another. When they have a task, they share wisdom but divide the work. When one cracks a joke, the other two laugh a belly laugh because they are so familiar with how each other¡¯s minds work.
I am not presenting a theological idea but my own personal image of the Triune God that helps me to have a close relationship with Him. I hope no one takes offense. ^^;
