목자가 평양과학기술대학 총장으로(President of Pyongyang Univ of Sci & Tech)-영어/한글
The servant leadership of House Church seems to be working on secular jobs as well. Many shepherds from Seoul Baptist Church successfully exercise servant leadership on their job. I’d like to introduce one of them - Dr. Yu-Taik Chon, the President of Pyongyang University of Science and Technology (PUST) in North Korea.
He was born into a Christian family, but as he got older, he became more interested in Zen Buddhism. He came to the U.S. for graduate studies, earned his PhD, worked in several different cities, then settled in Houston. When I came to Seoul Baptist Church, his wife Young-Ja Chon, was an unbeliever, but came to our first family retreat at her friend’s urging. The Holy Spirit deeply touched her during the retreat. She said she started crying for no reason and couldn’t keep tears back. Shortly after, she accepted Jesus Christ and her husband followed suit.
They diligently took the “Life” Bible study series offered at church, and their faith grew rapidly. Dr. Chon eventually served as Shepherd, Village Leader and Ordained Deacon.
Although they showed rapid growth in their faith, I didn’t expect them to be the first overseas volunteers from Seoul Baptist Church. But they were. They were trained and commissioned to Yanbian University of Science and Technology (YUST) in China. When Pyongyang University of Science and Technology (PUST) was opened, Dr. Chon and his wife went to North Korea to serve as faculty members, then recently became its president.
He has a special affection for Pyongyang because he was born there. He attended the same elementary school from which the late Chairman Kim Jung Il graduated. He joked that North Korean officials became extra polite when he mentioned that fact.
PUST is in a precarious situation due to the economic sanctions imposed on North Korea by President Trump. Dr. Chon is forbidden to return to North Korea because of the travel ban. He does his duty as the president from the USA through email. He recently went to Korea when the Coronavirus scare was at its peak for some important meetings. His wife pleaded with him not to go as he is part of the most vulnerable high-risk community – elderly with underlying health issues. But his commitment to PUST is stronger than his fear of illness.
He doesn’t command the acknowledgement or honor usually rendered to a university president, partly because of his humble demeanor and simple lifestyle. He carries his documents in his backpack and takes the subway.
Jesus said whosoever humbles himself will be exalted [Mt 23:12], and the last will be first [Lk 13:30] on Judgement Day. I expect Dr. and Mrs. Chon to be highly exalted in Heaven because they have willingly become servants here on earth.

가정교회 목자들이 추구하는 종이 되는 리더십은 사회 생활에도 열매를 가져옵니다. 휴스턴서울교회 목자들 가운데 성공적으로 직장생활을 하는 사람들이 많은데, 그 중의 한 분을 소개합니다. 평양과학기술대학 전유택 총장이십니다.
전 총장님은 크리스천 가정에서 태어났으나 장성하면서 불교에 더 관심이 쏠리기도 했습니다. 1993년 제가 휴스턴서울교회에 부임하고 처음 가졌던 교인 수양회에서 아내 전영자 자매가 친구에게 끌려서 참석했는데, 성령 체험을 했습니다. 이유 없이 눈물이 쏟아졌다고 했습니다. 자매님은 예수님을 주님으로 영접했고, 얼마 후 남편 전유택 형제님도 예수님을 영접했습니다. 두 분은 삶공부를 통하여 믿음이 급속도로 자랐고, 목자로, 안수집사로 섬기게 되었습니다.
50세가 넘어서 예수를 믿게 된 두 분이 휴스턴서울교회 첫 해외 봉사자가 될지는 몰랐습니다. 많은 신앙 선배를 제치고 제일 먼저 장기 해외봉사자로 헌신하여 연변 과학 기술대학에서 봉직하게 되었습니다. 그러다가 평양과학기술 대학(평양 과기대)이 개교되었을 때 그곳으로 임지를 옮겼고, 3년 전 김진경 초대 총장의 뒤를 이어 2대 총장이 되었습니다.
전 총장님은 평양에서 태어나서 한국 전쟁 때 극적으로 월남을 했습니다. 고 김정일 위원장과 같은 초등학교를 다녔다는데, 이 사실을 밝히면 북한 간부들 태도가 달라진다고 합니다. ^^;
지금 평양과기대 여건이 나쁩니다. 트럼프 대통령의 북한 제재 정책에 걸려서 전 총장님은 북한으로 돌아갈 수가 없어서, 장거리에서 이메일 등을 통하여 학교 일을 봅니다. 두세 주 전 한국에서 코로나바이러스 상황이 최악일 때, 전 총장님은 휴스턴을 떠나 한국에 나갔습니다. 코로나바이러스에 감염되면 치명적인 그룹- 나이 많고 병약한 그룹에 속하기 때문에 아내가 만류했지만, 사람들과의 약속을 취소할 수 없다고 나갔습니다.
사실 전 총장님은 대학교 총장임에도 불구하고 알아주는 사람들이 별로 없습니다. 성품도 소탈하고, 수행하는 개인 비서도 없고, 바퀴가 달린 짐 가방에 서류를 넣고 지하철을 타고 다니니까, 그럴 수밖에 없습니다. ^^;
예수님께서 자기를 낮추는 자는 높아질 것이고 [마 23:12]., 꼴찌인 자는 첫째가 될 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다[눅 13:30]. 세상에서 인정 받으려하지 않고 종의 자리에서 섬기는 전 총장님 내외분을 천국에서 만나면 하나님이 높여 주셔서 첫째가 되어 있을 것 같은 예감이 듭니다. ^^;
