The goal of the house church movement is to build the Biblical church. Some pastors would be offended by this statement. “Do you mean only house churches are biblical, and ours are not?” That is certainly not what I mean.
All aspects of today’s churches are based on Scripture. But over time, theologies, theories, and traditions changed the forms and practices of churches. Now today’s churches are quite different from those depicted in the New Testament. People born into Christian families may not see the difference, but people reading the Bible for the first time notice it.
In attempts to stay true to the New Testament model, the House Church adopted the dual principles of simple understanding and simple obedience. Simple understanding means that we interpret the Bible as the original writers intended, not through a particular theological lens. Simple obedience means we obey the Word as it is written, rather than over-analyzing or over-discussing it.
When these principles are followed, we find that previously ambiguous passages become very clear, and we experience the power of the Word in our daily lives. This is not surprising, because Biblical truth can only be found through obedience(John 14:21).
When we strive to build the Biblical church, our goal is to form a community like the triune God, a goal that is unachievable while we are living on earth. So building a Biblical church is a process. We need to continually correct and keep our churches accountable to make them as close as possible to those in the New Testament.

가정교회의 목표는 성경적인 교회를 세우는 것입니다. 이렇게 말하면 불쾌하게 생각하는 목회자들이 있습니다. “가정교회만 성경적인 교회이고, 일반 교회는 비성경적이라는 말이냐?” 물론 그런 의미는 아니지요. 그러나 모든 교회가 성경에서 시작했지만, 이론이 끼어들고 관행이 더해지면서 성경에서 많이 멀어져 있는 것은 사실입니다. 얼마나 멀어져 있는지, 목회자나 모태 신앙인들에게는 안 보입니다. 그러나 성경을 처음 접하는 VIP들은 봅니다.
교회가 성경에서 멀어지는 현상을 막기 위하여 가정교회에서는 ‘단순한 성경 이해와 단순한 순종’이라는 원칙을 붙들었습니다. 성경 쓰신 분의 의도를 발견하는 것을 성경 해석 원리로 붙들고, “성경이 그렇다면 그런 줄 알고, 아니라고 하면 아닌 줄 알고, 하라고 하면 하고, 하지 말라고 하면 안 하는” ‘단순한 이해’와 ‘단순한 순종’을 잡았습니다. 이렇게 하니까, 말씀이 진정으로 이해되고, 삶에서 파워가 나오더라 는 고백을 듣게 됩니다.
당연한 결과입니다. 성경은 이해하고 순종하는 것이 아니고, 순종할 때 이해되는 것이기 때문입니다(요 14:21).
성경적인 교회를 추구하는 가정교회에는 완성이 없고 지속적인 추구만 있습니다. 교회의 궁극적인 목표는, 사랑으로 엮어진 삼위일체 하나님과 같은 공동체를 이루는 것입니다. 이 세상에서 완성되는 것은 불가능합니다. 그러므로, 끊임없이 성경에 비추어 미흡한 것이 발견되면 보충하고, 잘못된 것을 발견되면 수정하여, 지속적으로 변화해 가고 발전해 가는 것이 가정교회입니다.
