동성애자 대응법(How to Love Homosexuals)-영어/한글
I think the homosexuality will be the next issue of contention between the Korean government and churches in near future. As the government is moving towards identifying homosexuals as an oppressed minority, the church, which states homosexuality as a sin, will likely be condemned as oppressors.
Christians should have a clear understanding of homosexuality in order to deal with the situation. The book “Holy Sexuality and the Gospel” by Christopher Yuan helped me to truly understand homosexuality. Professor Yuan, who used to be a practicing homosexual himself, became a Christian and now teaches at Moody Bible Institute as a faculty member. In this book he provides many insights about homosexuality based on his experiences and Scripture.
He believes that the number of people who are sexually attracted to the same sex is higher than commonly believed. But, contrary to the claim that homosexual tendency is innate and can’t be changed, he says the strength of the attraction varies individually and comes and goes through various stages of life. In fact, many homosexuals are also attracted to the opposite sex, get married, and live a happy life.
Same-sex attraction is not a sin in and of itself; acting on the attraction is. He criticizes those who teach that homosexual lifestyle is not sin. He explains this belief is based on faulty hermeneutics, and this teaching actually deprives homosexuals of the opportunity to be freed from a sinful lifestyle.
I found the following two concepts to be the most significant in regards to this issue:
Many Christians consider homosexuality an unforgivable sin, but it’s not. Homosexual sins are neither better nor worse than heterosexual sins. Christians should accept and love homosexuals and help them abandon their sinful lifestyle, just as we would with heterosexual sinners, instead of rejecting and condemning them.
Trying to suppress homosexual desires inevitably leads to failure. Instead, homosexuals should focus on Jesus Christ. The pleasure of sexual intercourse, either heterosexual or homosexual, is only the shadow of pleasure Christians will experience when the Bride (the Church) meets the Bridegroom (Christ) upon His Second Coming. Only this hope and anticipation can enable heterosexual and homosexual Christians to overcome any sinful sexual desires and keep themselves pure.

가까운 장래에, 한국에서는 동성애로 인하여 교회와 사회간의 큰 갈등이 야기될 것이 예상됩니다. 진보를 자처하는 정치인들은 동성애자를 핍박 받은 소수자로 간주하여 동성애가 죄라고 주장하는 교회를, 이들을 억압하는 편협한 집단으로 몰아갈 것입니다. 이에 바르게 대처하기 위해서는 동성애를 제대로 이해해야 합니다.
동성애에 관해 명쾌한 답을 주는 책이 있습니다. 무디 신학교 교수인 Christopher Yuan인 저술한 ‘Holy Sexuality and the Gospel’입니다. 저자 자신이 동성애자였다가 그 삶에서 벗어났고, 무디 신학교 교수로서 성경적인 근거가 튼튼하기 때문에, 미국에서는 크리스천들, 특히 젊은 크리스천들에게 널리 읽히고 있습니다.
저자는 동성에 끌리는 사람들이 예상보다 훨씬 많다고 합니다. 그러나 동성애 운동가들이 말하듯이, 이런 성향은 타고난 것이 아니고 절대 벗어날 수 없는 것도 아니라고 합니다. 이런 끌림은 개인마다 강도가 다르고, 성장해 가면서 없다가 생기기도 하고 있었다가 사라지기도한답니다. 동성애자들 가운데에는 이성에게도 끌리는 경우가 많아서 이성과 결혼해서 행복한 결혼생활을 하는 사람들도 많답니다.
동성에게 끌리는 성향 자체는 죄가 아닙니다. 이 성향에 굴복하여 동성애의 삶을 사는 것이 죄입니다. 동성애자로서의 삶을 죄가 아니라고 주장하는 크리스천들이 있는데, 이렇게 말하는 것은 이들이 죄에서 벗어나 자유롭게 될 기회를 박탈하는 것과 마찬가지라고 저자는 강하게 주장합니다.
이 저자로부터 제가 새롭게 배운 것은 다음 두 가지입니다.
동성애자들을 별난 인간으로 취급하고 동성애를 용서받지 못할 죄처럼 취급하는 수가 있는데 그래서는 안 됩니다. 동성애이건 이성애이건 결혼하지 않은 대상과 성관계를 갖는 것은 죄입니다. 이성 간의 성적인 죄에는 관대하고, 동성 간의 성적인 죄에는 엄격해서는 안 됩니다. 배우자 아닌 사람과 불륜에 빠진 사람을 타일러서 회개하고 돌아오도록 하듯이, 동성애자들도 거부하거나 매도하지말고, 사랑으로 품어 동성애의 삶에서 벗어나도록 도와야 합니다.
동성애 욕구를 억누른다고 사라지는 것이 아닙니다. 동성애의 유혹을 이기려는데 집중하기보다 예수님에게 초점을 맞추어야 합니다. 성 관계에서 맛보는 쾌락은, 예수님이 재림하실 때 그리스도의 신부인 교회가 맛보게 될 즐거움의 맛보기입니다. 그러므로 그날을 준비하며, 그리스도의 신부로서 자신을 정결케 하는 데 초점을 맞출 때 동성애이건 이성애이건 성적인 유혹을 이길 수 있습니다.
