아름다운 크리스천(Beautiful Christians)-영어/한글
One of the joys in life is meeting beautiful Christians. I experienced such joy when I met with my wife’s cousin Ann and her husband Dae-Hyun (Danny) Kim while visiting California last Christmas.
Danny is a Stanford graduate. He initially wanted to be a medical doctor but decided teaching kids in the inner city would be more meaningful. So after graduation he went to Harvard and obtained a Master’s in Education.
After teaching at a public high school in San Francisco for a few years, he founded Rise University Preparatory with a team of like-minded people. The mission of the school is to help underprivileged youth enter a four-year college so that they can break the cycle of poverty into which they were born.
The school now has forty staff members, including teachers and administrators, all Christians. Most of them are graduates from top-rated universities such as Stanford or Ivy League schools. They would be making a lot of money in secular jobs, but they choose to accept significantly reduced salaries teaching at Rise Prep. The school is registered as a Christian school, therefore unable to receive financial aid from neither federal nor local governments. They solely depend on donations from Christian organizations and individuals for the operation of the school.
The school building, used as the school during the weekdays and as the church during weekends, is located in one of the poorest neighborhoods in San Francisco. Danny and Ann bought a house near school (They have two kids of their own. ) because they feel that living in the same neighborhood as their students will enhance the spirit of community and accountability.
Danny’s wife Ann is also a Stanford graduate who attended medical school at UCSF (University of California San Francisco). Rather than accepting a prestigious job to match her prestigious training, she works for the San Francisco Department of Public Health, which provides healthcare for many homeless and underserved populations.
As a pastor, I preach the Gospel, but they live out the Gospel. That’s why I feel small when I am with them. In the Old Testament, Sodom and Gomorrah would not have been destroyed if there had been 10 righteous people. I think Danny and Ann are those “righteous people.” I feel God blesses America despite her multiple sins and transgressions because of people like them.

아름다운 크리스천을 만나면 기분이 좋습니다. ^^; 그러한 사람 중의 하나가 작년 크리스마스 캘리포니아를 방문했을 때 만났던, 제 아내 사촌 동생의 남편 김대현(Danny Kim) 씨입니다.
40대 김대현 씨는 명문 스탠퍼드 대학에서 의대를 가기 위해 준비하고 있다가, 의사가 되어 돈을 버는 것보다는 교사가 되어서 불우 청소년을 지도하는 것이 더 보람이 있는 삶이라는 결론을 내리고, 대학을 졸업한 후에 하버드 대학에 입학하여 교육학 석사학위를 마쳤습니다. 그리고 샌프란시스코 빈민가에 있는 고등학교에서 영어를 가르치다가, Rise University Preparatory라는 학교를 동료들과 함께 설립하여 빈민가 청소년을 집중적으로 교육시키는 일을 하고 있습니다. 이들을 정규 4년제 대학에 입학시켜 빈곤에서 벗어나도록 하는 것이 목표입니다.
학교 직원은 약 40명인데, 스탠퍼드, 하버드 등 쟁쟁한 명문 대학 출신들입니다. 모두 크리스천입니다. 빈민가에 학교를 세우면 당연히 정부 지원을 받는데, 크리스천 교육을 표방하기 때문에 지원을 못 받고 기부금에 의하여 운영되고 있습니다. 샌프란시스코 지역에서 가장 가난한 지역에 학교 건물을 구입하여, 주중에는 학교, 주말에는 교회로 사용하고 있습니다.
김대현 씨 아내는 명문 스탠퍼드 대학을 졸업하고 또 하나의 명문 UCSF( University of California San Francisco) 의대를 졸업한 수재입니다. 고액의 봉급을 받을 수 있는 기회를 버리고 샌프란시스코 보건소에 내과 의사로 취직하여 무숙자와 빈민자를 돌보고 있습니다.
두 내외는 학생들을 바르게 교육하기 위해서는 같은 지역에 살아야 한다고 학교 근처에 허름한 집을 구입하여 자녀 둘과 살고 있습니다. (어떤 때 유리창 문밖을 내다보면 마약 거래 하는 것이 보인답니다. ^^;)
목사인 나는 복음을 설교만 하고 있는데, 이 사람들은 복음을 살아내고 있습니다. 그래서 이들 앞에서 부끄러워집니다. 하나님께서 10명의 의인만 있으면 소돔과 고모라를 멸하지 않겠다고 하셨는데, 미국의 타락에도 불구하고 이런 사람들이 때문에 하나님께서 아직도 미국에서 복을 거두어가지 않으시는 것 같습니다.
