요즈음 2020년 총선 개표가 조작되었다는 음모론이 떠돌고 있습니다. 한때는 천안함이 북한 해군의 어뢰에 의해 침몰된 것이 아니라는 음모론이 떠돈 적도 있습니다.
비극적인 사건이 일어난 후 조사 결과서가 발표되면, 공식적인 보고서를 믿지 못하는 사람들이 음모론을 제기합니다. 잘 알려진 것 중 하나가, 미국 케네디 대통령이 오스왈드 한 사람이 아니라 어떤 집단에 의해 살해되었다는 음모론입니다. 이만치 알려지지는 않았지만, 인간이 달에 착륙한 것은 사실이 아니고 소련과의 우주 경쟁에서 승리한 것처럼 보이기 위한 미우주항공국(NASA)의 조작이라는 음모론도 있습니다.
달 착륙에 관해서는 음모론자들이 우주인이 달에서 찍은 사진에 의문을 제기합니다. “왜 깜깜할 때 달에서 찍은 사진에 별이 안 보이느냐?” “달에는 바람이 없을 텐데 왜 성조기가 펄럭이느냐?” “착륙선이 내려갈 때 분사의 반동으로 큰 분화구가 생겼을 텐데, 왜 사진에 안 보이느냐?” 과학자들이 논리적인 설명을 해주었지만 이들은 생각을 바꾸지 않습니다. 과학자들이 짜고서 거짓말을 하고 있고, 자신들만이 진실을 알고 있다고 굳게 믿기 때문입니다.
음모론자들은 큰 사건이 생긴 후 조사 결과 보고서에서 작은 모순을 찾아내어 이를 침소봉대하여 보고서 전체를 의심하게 만듭니다. 그러나 저는 공식 보고서에 석연치 않은 부분이 있어도, 거의 그대로 받아드립니다. 세상 살면서, 모순 같은 일이 실제로 일어나는 것을 자주 경험하기 때문입니다.
그러나 음모론을 받아드리기 힘든 가장 큰 이유는, 음모론을 사실로 받아드린다면 공식 발표보다 더 많은 의문이 생기고, 더 믿기 어려워지기 때문입니다. 예를 들어 인간이 달에 착륙했다는 것이 음모에 의한 조작이라면, 수많은 사람들이, 긴 세월 동안, 한 사람의 배반자도 없이,거짓 시나리오를 창출해내야 하는데, 제가 보기에는 이렇게 하는 것이, 인간을 달나라에 보내는 것보다 더 어렵습니다.
독재 국가에서는 은폐나 조작이 가능합니다. 그러나 대한민국이나 미국과 같은 열린 사회에서 국가 차원의 조작은 거의 불가능합니다. 반드시 폭로하는 사람이 생기기 때문입니다.
음모론이 떠돌 때 이를 무시하는 것이 최선이라고 생각합니다.

After a big tragedy takes place, conspiracy theories often follow. A conspiracy theory circulating in Korea right now is that the last general election, which saw an overwhelming victory for the ruling party, was rigged. Another persistent conspiracy theory is in regards to the Korean naval ship ROKS Cheonan. Rather than being sunk by torpedoes from a North Korean submarine as officially announced, many believe the South Korean government is trying to cover up that a self-inflicted accident actually caused its sinking.
One of the most widely held conspiracy theories in the US is that President Kennedy was shot by a secret shooter, not Lee Harvey Oswald. A lesser known conspiracy theory touts that the moon landing was a hoax engineered by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to falsely claim that the US beat the USSR in the race to reach the moon. This conspiracy is founded on issues with the moon landing photos. They ask why stars are not visible in the picture though the picture was taken when it was dark, why the American flag is fluttering when there is no air on the moon, or why the astronauts leave footprints but the lunar modules leave no landing marks on the moon’s surface
Rational explanations provided by scientists are completely ineffective in changing conspiracy theorists beliefs. They have already decided what they believe to be true, and their thoughts cannot be shaken.
I don’t take conspiracy theories seriously because they are often harder to believe than the official explanations themselves. For example, for the moon landing to be a hoax, numerous people with countless different government positions would have had to secretly work together in unison for a long time without leaking any information. This seems harder to accomplish than landing men on the moon.
Conspiracy theories usually stem from minor contradictions found in official explanations. People are eager to point out these contradictions, read more into them than is reasonable, then come up with their own explanations. But close examination usually reveals significantly more contradictions in the conspiracy theories than the official reports.
Unlike novels or movies, big scale conspiracies are hard to fabricate in an open society like Korea or the US. Simply ignoring them is the wisest choice.
