아내가 천국 갔습니다(My Wife Is Gone to Heaven)-영어/한글
My wife went to heaven on June 29, 2020 at 3:50 am at the age of 73, just one year before our golden anniversary.
When she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer 24 years ago, the tumor was the size of a grapefruit and had already spread. People in this condition generally survive only a few years, but she lived a relatively healthy life for the past 24 years. I credit this to the excellent treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Research Center, but more to the fervent prayers of many family members, church members, and the house church pastors and their wives all over the world.
Though never officially in remission, the cancer started growing significantly 8 years ago and stopped responding to any treatment last November. By April it was growing and spreading rapidly. At our final appointment in early June, the doctor predicted my wife had 2-3 weeks to live.
She had already sensed that her days on earth were numbered and had been busy getting her affairs in order. When she was informed that she had only 2-3 weeks to live, she invited her friends to say goodbye. She gathered her son and daughter and their families together and said her last words of wisdom and love. She was then ready to go to heaven and asked everyone to pray for her to be taken as quickly and painlessly as possible, rather than prolonging her life.
I conveyed her wish to my 400 intercessory prayer partners, and they prayed according to her wishes. God answered our prayer; she had no pain until she breathed her last even though her abdomen and chest were almost filled with tumors.
My wife and I both wanted to be cremated, so there will only be a photo and no coffin at the memorial service. She wanted it to be a celebration of her entrance into heaven, not a mourning of her departure. She personally selected celebratory hymns to be sung, reflecting a spirit of joy. She also asked that those in attendance wear bright colors instead of black for the service.
The service will be held at 7:30 pm (CST) on July 1 (9:30 am on July 2 in Korean time) and will be viewable online. English translation will be available. You can find detailed information and guidance at the address below.

아내가 오늘 6월 29일 새벽 3시 50분에 74세로, 이 세상을 떠나 천국으로 갔습니다. 결혼 50주년을 1년 앞두고 갔습니다.
24년 전 난소암 말기로 판정이 내려졌을 때 암이 이미 몸 여러 곳에 퍼져 있었습니다. 이런 상태에서는 1~2년을 넘기지 못한다고 했는데, 24년을 건강하게 지냈습니다. 엠디엔더슨 암센터의 탁월한 의술도 있었지만, 많은 분들의 간절한 기도 덕분이었습니다.
8년 전에 암이 다시 자라기 시작하였습니다. 다시 항암 치료를 받았으나, 지난해 11월부터 더 이상 약이 안 들어서 치료를 중단했습니다. 그런데, 5월 초부터 종양이 맹렬하게 몸에 퍼지기 시작하였습니다. 당시 한국에 있었던 저는 급히 미국으로 돌아와 6월 초 주치의를 만났는데, 약 2~3주 정도 생명이 남았다고 했습니다.
아내는 종양이 퍼지는 것을 느끼면서 임종이 가까운 것을 알고 가계와 가사를 정리하기 시작했습니다. 그러다가 의사로부터 생명이 2~3주 남았다는 소식을 듣고는 친지들을 집으로 불러 작별 인사를 나누었습니다. 자녀들도 불러 모아 마지막 당부를 하였습니다. 그리고는 이제 천국 갈 준비가 끝났으니까, 통증 없이 속히 천국 가게 해달라고 기도를 부탁했습니다.
이 제목으로 제 기도 파트너, 153 기도 요원들이 기도를 했는데, 아내는 서서히 기력이 쇠하면서 가물가물하던 촛불이 꺼지듯이 조용히, 평안하게, 천국으로 떠났습니다. 복부와 흉부가 종양으로 꽉 차다시피 했는데도 숨이 질 때까지 통증이 없었습니다. 하나님께서 확실히 기도에 응답해 주셨습니다.
아내 장례식은 휴스턴서울교회 교회장으로 치러집니다. 아내는 (저도) 화장할 것이기 때문에, 관 없이 영정 사진만 놓고 장례 예배를 드릴 것입니다. 아내는 장례 예배가 천국에 간 것을 축하하는 축제가 되기를 원했습니다. 장례 예배 때 부를 찬송가도 밝은 것으로 2개를 지정하였습니다. 조객들도 검은색 말고 밝고 아름다운 복장으로 참석해 주기를 부탁해 달라고 했습니다. 아내의 간곡한 부탁이 있었기 때문에 화환과 조의금은 사절합니다. (화환을 보내도 장례식장에 진열하지 않을 것입니다. ^^;)
