놀라게 하는 여자 (A Woman Full of Surprises)-영어/한글
The memorial service for my wife was held on July 1, hosted by Seoul Baptist Church of Houston. The attendance was limited to 125 because of Covid-19, but many people attended the service online. Close to 10,000 people have now watched it on YouTube .
My wife was full of surprises.
I wasn’t attracted to her when I first met her. I thought women who were too intelligent or too pretty (and she was both) couldn’t possess the warmth and kindness I sought. But when I met her again a few years later, I was surprised to find that she was exactly my type, warm and kind. When we were dating, I was a naval officer with a meager salary and she worked at an American bank, earning significantly more than I did. She often paid for our dates, but very discreetly. Asian culture at that time demanded that only men pay for dates, so she would hand me money under the table so I could pay the cashier and save face. So I married her.
When I felt called to pastoral ministry, she adamantly refused and claimed she could not and would not perform the role of a pastor’s wife. Once I was ordained to become a pastor, however, she surprised me by becoming a model pastor’s wife. She generously gifted money to those who struggled financially so that they could buy what they needed. She met with people and rendered her ear to many struggling with personal hurt and pain. She did many of these things without telling me. I came to know about her kind acts only after she passed, as person after person approached me with their stories.
The fact that she lived for 24 years after doctors predicted she would only survive for a few was a big surprise. But there were more. Two years ago she went into septic shock in the MD Anderson Emergency Room. The doctors declared she would not survive the night as her organs shut down, one by one. But intercessory prayer revived her and she lived two more years. Furthermore, as the cancer in her body started growing and spreading rapidly last May, my 153 prayer partners prayed for her painless passing. I confess that I thought a couple days of pain would be inevitable in her final days, but surprisingly, she was painless to the end.
My son Danny, my daughter Christine and I were with her when she breathed her last at 3:50 am, we were surprised to see a tear rolling down from her closed eyes. What is it? She said she had no regrets in life, and she had never cried when she was sad or in pain. We agreed it was a tear of joy as she met Jesus whom she had loved so much and had been longing to meet.

지난 7월 1일(목)에 드렸던 아내 장례 예배는 코로나 바이러스 방역을 고려해서125명만 모시고 드렸습니다. 그러나 많은 분들이 온라인으로 참석하셨습니다. 영어 통역을 통해 예배에 참석한 사람들이 300명이 넘었고, 장례 예배 동영상 접속 숫자는 1만 명에 육박합니다.
제 아내는 항상 저를 놀라게 했습니다.
제가 대학교 4학년, 아내가 2학년, 남녀 학생 몇 명이 화진포에서 여름방학을 같이 보내기 위해 만났을 때, 저는 아내에게 관심이 없었습니다. 저는 착한 여자를 좋아하는데 너무 예쁘고 똑똑해 보였기 때문입니다. 그후 소식이 끊겼다가 몇 년 후 다시 아내를 만나게 되었는데, 놀랍게도 아내가 착한 여자인 것을 발견했습니다. 예를 들어, 박봉의 해군 장교였던 제가 데이트 비용이 딸리는 것 같으면 식사 후 식탁 밑으로 돈을 내 손에 쥐어, 내가 밥값을 내도록 해서 남자 체면을 살려주었습니다. 그래서 이 착한 여자와 결혼하기로 결심했습니다. ^^;
제가 신학교에 갈 때에는 심하게 반발했지만, 일단 목사가 된 후에는 모범 사모가 되어서 저를 놀라게 했습니다. 재정적으로 어려움이 있는 교인들에게 남몰래 돈을 보내주고, 가난한 청년들에게 어울릴 것 같다며 옷을 사주고, 힘들어하는 사람 만나 식사 대접하며 얘기 들어주고… 이런 사실을 저는 모르고 있다가 아내가 세상 떠난 요즈음 알게 되었습니다. 제 목회의 반은 아내가 한다고 주위에서 말하면 “과연 그럴까?” 생각했었는데, 그것이 사실이었다는 것을 깨닫습니다.
아내가 난소암 말기로 2~3년을 살지 못할 것이라고 했는데 24년을 살아서 주위 사람들을 놀라게 했는데, 놀라움은 그것으로 그치지 않습니다. 2년 전, 급성 패혈증에 걸려서 신체 기관이 하나하나 기능 정지되기 시작하여 그날 밤을 넘기지 못하리라는 판정을 받았을 때, 수요 기도회에 참석했던 서울교회 교인들이 간절히 기도하면서 기관들이 하나하나 기능을 회복하기 시작하여 2년을 더 건강하게 살았습니다. 또 임종이 가까웠을 때, 153 기도 요원들이 기도한 대로 통증이 없었지만, 마지막 며칠만은 통증으로 고생하지 않을까 예상했는데, 끝까지 고통 없이 세상을 떠나서 놀라게 했습니다.
임종 시간이 새벽 3시 50분이었는데, 아들, 딸, 저, 셋이서 지켜보았습니다. 마지막으로 ‘헉’하고 숨을 들이 쉬고는 숨을 거두었는데, 아내 눈가에 눈물이 한 방울 맺혀 있는 것을 보았습니다. 이건 뭐지? 세상을 떠나면서 여한이 없다고 말했고, 평소에 아프거나 슬퍼서 눈물을 흘리는 법이 없었는데? 그 때 우리는 깨달았습니다. 아! 숨이 멎는 순간, 그렇게 그리던 예수님을 만나면서 환희의 눈물을 흘렸구나!
