I have been highly recommending for the people who are concerned about the Bible criticism to read the History of Gospel Criticism written by some Reformed theologians not so as to be confirmation bias. Plato said that the people looking at the only wall inside a cave might indulge in the confirmation bias in his Allegory of Cave, and so they couldn’t see far more of the world.
And also Francis Bacon said that the idols and false notions which have already preoccupied the human understanding, and are deeply rooted in it, not only so beset men’s minds that they become difficult of access, but even when access is obtained will again meet and trouble us in the instauration of the sciences, unless mankind when forewarned guard themselves with all possible care against them.
He said that the idols of the den(cavern) are those of each individual; for everybody (in addition to the errors common to the race of man) has his own individual den or cavern, which intercepts and corrupts the light of nature, either from his own peculiar and singular disposition, or from his education and intercourse with others, or from his reading.
필자는 성서비평에 관심이 있는 사람들에게 확증편견에 빠지지 않기 위하여 개혁주의 신학자가 쓴 ‘복음비평사’를 읽도록 강권하고 있다. 플라톤은 말하기를 그의 ‘동굴의 알레고리’에서 동굴 안쪽 벽만을 바라보고 있는 사람은 확증편견에 빠질 수 있고, 그래서 더 넓은 세상을 볼 수 없다고 했다.
그리고 또한 프랜시스 베이컨은 이미 인간의 오성을 지배하고 있고, 그 안에 깊이 뿌리박고 있는 우상들과 허구의 거짓 관념들이 사람들의 마음을 사로잡고 있어서 접근하기가 어려울 뿐만 아니라, 접근한다고 해도, 인간이 사전 경고를 들을 때, 그들에 대하여 가능한 모든 배려(방법)로 스스로 지키지 못하면, 학문을 회복하는 데 있어서 또다시 어려움을 겪게 될 것이라고 말했다.
그는 \\"동굴의 우상이란 각 개인적인 것으로; 모든 사람은(인간 종족에게 일상 있는 잘못들에 부연하여) 각각 자신의 개인적 밀실이나 동굴을 가지고 있어서, 그 자신 독특하고 유일한 성향이나, 그의 교육과 다른 사람과의 교류관계, 혹은 그의 독서(독학)로 인하여 자연의 빛(the light of nature)을 가로막고 전와(손상)시킨다\\"고 했다. 💟💟💟
